History and the modern times

Kyiv Orthodox Theological Academy is a leading institution of higher ecclesiastic education in Ukraine. It is situated on the territory of the administrative center of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine – St. Michael’s Golden-domed Monastery.

The glorious four-hundred-year history of the academy begins in 1615 with the establishment of Kyiv Fraternal School. Saint Iov Boretskyi was its first rector.

Owing to the reforms of St. Petro Mohyla, Kyiv Academy remained the only higher Orthodox theological educational institution in Eastern Europe and the entire Orthodox world, and its graduates – not only Ukrainians, but also Serbs, Bulgarians, Greeks, Montenegrins, Romanians, Syrians, Georgians – became archpastors and even the patriarchs of the Eastern Churches, in particular the Ecumenical archbishops.

We will mention only some of those who were canonized by the Church: holy hierarchs Dymytriy of Rostov, Innokenty of Irkutsk, Ioan Maksymovich, Ioasaf of Bilhorod, Innokenty Borisov, Venerable Paisius Velichkovsky (Athos), Theophanes the Recluse, Saint Constantine of Politan (Patriarchate of Constantinople), Catholicos-Patriarchs Kalistratus and Kirion (Georgian Orthodox Church), Venerable Dosifei Vasych (Serbian Orthodox Church).

Ecumenical Patriarch Constantine I, Patriarch Alexander III Tahan of Alexandria, Patriarch Nikodim Muntianu of Romania, Catholicos-Patriarch Leonid Okropiridze of Georgia, Metropolitan Mykhailo Yovanovych of Belgrade, Metropolitan Kliment Drumev of Tirnov (Bulgarian Orthodox Church), Bishop of Stavropol Filaret Scriban (Romanian Orthodox Church) should be mentioned separately and the authoritative expert in the field of church law, Bishop of Dalmatia Nikodym Milash (Serbian Orthodox Church).

Among the large number of well-known scientists and teachers who studied at the academy, we can mention the founder of Tbilisi State University, the encyclopedist scientist and the first director of the Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature Korneliy Kekelidze, the academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences historian Ivan Snegaryov, the Serbian theologian and philosopher Radoslav Veshovich, etc. . Such a list of prominent figures from the Balkans, the Middle East and the Caucasus, among whom there were public and political figures, can be continued and continued…

In the short period since its revival, the academy has achieved significant success in raising the educational and theological level, which was contributed by the efforts of its rectors – Metropolitans Danyil (Chokaliuk), Dymytriy (Rudiuk), His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Epiphaniy (Dumenko) and Archpriest Oleksandr Trofymliuk.

Thus, Kyiv Academy was the first among domestic institutions of theological education to pass the licensing and accreditation procedure for educational programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s and educational and scientific (PhD) levels.

The Academy has a theological faculty, three chairs, a regent’s department, postgraduate and doctoral studies which function fruitfully.

The educational process is conducted by a team of 44 members of research and teaching staff, including 10 doctors and 25 candidates of sciences, 14 professors and 14 associate professors.

Education, accommodation in comfortable conditions, three meals a day are free of charge for the students.

The Academy is also known for its scientific activities: the specialized publication “Proceedings of Kyiv Theological Academy” is published here, dissertation defenses take place, international conferences are held, the Institute of Church and Society and the student scientific society operate here.

Kyiv Academy continues to bear good fruit for the benefit of the pious Ukrainian people and for the establishment of the local Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
