Areas of scientific activity

The field of theological science uses the conceptual apparatus of philosophy and other related humanitarian disciplines and takes the texts of the Holy Scriptures and Holy Tradition as a normative basis, developing its research, scientific methodology and terminology in the areas of biblical theology and biblical studies, dogmatic theology, liturgical theology and liturgy, patristic theology (patrology), hagiology and hagiography, moral(ethic) theology, pastoral theology, apologetic theology, church history, canonical (church) law, sacred art and pastoral practice.

Scientific research in this area contributes to the knowledge of early Christian, medieval and modern theology, theological concepts and trends that have had a significant impact on social and cultural development in Ukraine and the world.

The main areas of research at KOTA are:

– Biblical theology and biblical studies. Biblical propaedeutics, hermeneutics, exegesis, textual studies, history, archeology, geography, philology, cultural studies.
– Dogmatic theology. Formulation in synchrony and diachrony of the system of church doctrine in the aspects of triadology, Christian cosmology, christology, pneumatology, soteriology, ecclesiology, protology and eschatology, sacramentology, mariology, anthropology, etc. Comparative theology. Ecumenism.
– Liturgical theology and liturgy. Worship and communion with God. Formation and development of annual, weekly and daily services, as well as sacraments and rites. Theological analysis of liturgical texts and their genre varieties. Comparative liturgy.
– Patristic theology (patrology). The study of life, work and teaching (views) of church writers (holy fathers and teachers of the Church). Theological schools, traditions, concepts. Greek, Latin, Syrian, Slavic, Coptic, Armenian, Georgian, Ukrainian and other patristic traditions. Apocryphal and other church literature. Modern theology.
– Hagiology and hagiography. Theological justification of holiness. Typology of holiness. Veneration of saints, their icons and relics. Canonisation and beatification.
– Moral theology. Basic ethical categories. The development of Christian morality and the formation of moral laws in their historical and systematic dimensions. Christian spirituality and asceticism. Social teaching of the Church. Bioethics.
– Pastoral theology. The personality of the pastor and his activity as a spiritual and moral leader. Theological foundations of pastoral ministry. The pastor as a confessor. Chaplaincy ministry. Pastor’s extra-curricular activities. Pastoral ethics and aesthetics, psychology and psychiatry.
– Apologetic theology. The problem of proving the existence of God and the truth of the doctrine. Theology and philosophy. Theology and science. Faith, intelligence and knowledge.
– The history of the Church as a divine-human community united on the basis of a common doctrine in the period of early, medieval and modern Christianity. History of the Ukrainian and other national churches. Church archaeology, source studies, archaeology, archaeography and historiography of theological and church-historical research.
– Canonical (ecclesiastical) law. Sources of canonical law and their codification. Implementation and practical application of canonical law. The structure of the Church and the legal status of its institutions and members. Church-state and church-social relations.
– Theological education and science. Methodology of theological research and methods of teaching theological disciplines.
– Iconology and iconography. Church singing and music. Church architecture.
– Homiletics. Theoretical foundations and practice of church preaching.
– Missiology.
